Apium prostratum
NZ Celery
Native celery has thick grooved stems and a thick, deep taproot. It is a creeping plant. In the wild it is found throughout New Zealand along the coast. The leaves and stems can be eaten raw or cooked and the seeds can be used for flavouring. Select the larger outside stalks leaving the rest of the plant to grow. This was one of the plants Cook used to prevent scurvy among his crew.

An annual or bi-annual plant which readily self-seeds in the garden. Flowers are primrose yellow with a purply brown eye. Very attractive when planted en masse in the garden border.

A quick growing small tree, particularly suitable for providing shelter and shade in exposed coastal areas. Will also grow inland if protected from frost when young. Very useful in establishing the initial shelter in a coastal garden.

Parsonsia heterophylla
Nzjasmine
A vigorous climber which flowers almost all the year round. The creamy flowers are borne in a large cluster and are sweet smelling. Butterflies are attracted to the flowers. When grown from seed, the plant passes through a juvenile stage with very thin brown leaves of various shapes and sizes. Grow up a trellis for best appreciation of the flowers. Hardy and versatile.

A low growing plant with very free flowering habit. A mass of little white flowers is produced all summer and is followed by translucent white berries. Grows in most places, best in sun. Attractive hanging over walls.

A very slow growing tree which does best in warmer districts. When established, this tree is very handsome with its long trunk and 'feather-duster' top. Plant in a shaded, sheltered spot where there is plenty of moisture.
