An attractive grass with dark green flat leaves contrasting well with the long rich purple-red sheath at the leaf base. The cut, drying leaves smell like new mown hay or vanilla. Grows in a semi-shaded, moist but well drained site. The drooping golden-brown flower heads overtop the foliage in spring. Used for weaving by Maori people.
