Metrosideros carminea
Crimson Rata
This rata has small rounded leaves when young, changing to a larger more pointed form when flowering stage is reached. Climbs by clinging and so can be grown up anything where there is a roughened surface to cling to. Crimson flowers smother the plant for a short but spectacular show in spring. Young foliage is frost sensitive. When Crimson rata is cutting grown from mature plants the resulting plant forms a shrub rather than a climber. Can be grown on the coast.

Chatham Island Forget-Me-Not
A spectacular plant with glossy rhubarb-like leaves which reach very large proportions when conditions are suitable. In spring large heads of sky-blue flowers are held above the leaves and continue for approximately one month. Prefers a cool situation and rich moist soil. In warmer North Island areas the best position for the Forget-me -not is on the southern or eastern wall of a building or where other shrubs give mid-day shade. If in a too deeply shaded place they will not flower. Leaves can be frosted in an open situation.
